Why I’m Now Becoming a Career Coach (After Accidentally Building a Resume Writing Business)

By Komakech Edwin Donald | Fri, 30th May 2025

I never really planned on becoming a resume writer.

I studied Accounting and Finance — both at diploma and degree level — because I thought it was the safest path. It felt like the “sensible” choice. Like many others, I was simply chasing a career with “many job openings.”

But something shifted around 2020.

I was active on a WhatsApp group called “Professional CV Writers,” led by the late Ivan Nkono (may his soul rest in peace), my Old Boy from Kiira College Butiki. I remember reading post after post — testimonials of people landing job offers or interview invites after rewriting their CVs.

And it hit me — these were just regular people like me, getting extraordinary results.

At the time, I had just wrapped up a long and frustrating job search after completing my diploma. I found myself dropping confidence tips in comment sections, helping friends reword their CVs, sharing encouragement before interviews — not for money, but because I understood their struggle.

Later, when I joined MUBS for my bachelor’s, I discovered Coach Samuel Ibanda, who ran career-related YouTube content. I learned quietly by watching and absorbing.

Eventually, I began helping people for free. Pro bono.
That’s when it started.

The thank-you texts. The “I got the job!” messages. The referrals.
Those small wins meant everything to me.

Between 2021 and 2022, I’d helped maybe ten people — mostly unpaid. But in 2023, the tide turned. I started showing up on more WhatsApp forums. I began documenting real success stories. Clients started coming — and bringing others.

That’s when I became “The Job Vaccine Doctor.”
It felt right. It felt like healing. It felt like purpose.

Since May 2023, I’ve reviewed over 700 CVs and worked directly with 500+ clients — many of whom landed interviews, secured job offers, or got promoted.

But there’s a part of the story I rarely told.

Despite all the wins, I avoided deeper engagements.
People would ask for interview coaching, mock sessions, or clarity calls — and I would freeze.

Why?

Because I have a speech stutter.
I talk fast. I used to believe that meant I wasn’t “polished” enough to coach anyone.

But I’ve grown.
I’ve learned that coaching isn’t about being perfect — it’s about showing up with value.

I’ve learned to ground myself. I’ve learned to speak slower.
And most importantly, I’ve come to see that real human connection is more powerful than a flawless delivery.

So today, I’m expanding beyond resume writing.

✅ I’m launching my Interview Packs
✅ I’m offering Interview Coaching
✅ I’m telling stories that empower people to step into their next opportunity with boldness

I’ve also realized that storytelling is my hidden strength — a blend of my marketing background, lived experiences, and deep desire to help others be seen.

If you’ve read this far — thank you.
And if you’re navigating your own career crossroads, I want you to know this:

You don’t have to be perfect.
You just need to show up — for yourself, and for those you’re meant to help.

🩺 I’m The Job Vaccine Doctor — and this is just the beginning.
